FAQ
Questions before your first class.
Everything here comes straight from how the dojo runs. If it isn’t answered, call or text and ask.
Do I need experience to start?
No. Fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu is a co-ed class built for beginners — it focuses on technique with no sparring. Gi and No Gi classes are mixed-level, so you can move into them whenever you’re ready.
Is the first class really free?
Yes, for Oʻahu residents. Your first class is free and includes a free gi rental.
Do I need my own gi?
Not for your first class — a gi rental is included. Island Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t require a specific gi, so once you’re training regularly, wear what you have.
What’s the difference between Gi and No Gi classes?
Gi classes teach self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu techniques in the traditional uniform. No Gi classes cover No Gi grappling, submission wrestling and jiu-jitsu techniques without the gi. Both run 1.5 hours with the same structure: warm-ups and drills, detail-oriented technique, then open mat for sparring or continued drilling.
Are there contracts?
No. Island Jiu-Jitsu does not have contracts. Pay per class ($30), per month ($150 for 8 classes or $185 unlimited), or with a 10-class punch card ($200, valid 6 months).
What does a monthly membership include?
The 4 and 8 class-per-month memberships include free open mat. Unlimited is $185 a month for every class on the schedule.
Can I drop in if I train somewhere else?
Yes. Drop-ins are $30 per class, and everyone is welcome regardless of school or affiliation.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes — 15% off for active military, students (adult memberships only) and ʻohana, meaning two or more immediate family members. Active & Fit members receive a free unlimited jiu-jitsu membership.
Do you offer private lessons?
All coaches teach private lessons. Contact a coach or Jason Vigil at (808) 383-9196 for details on privates and small group classes.
